PRESENTED BY
THE DOMESDAY BOOK OF DOGS

American Allaunt

This American breed is modelled on the Allaunt of old, former war dogs which were expected to tackle wolf, boar, bear and also "to hunten the leoun or the deer" according to Geoffrey Chaucer (c1343 - 1400).  Formerly known as the 'Ozark Mountin Dog' (a name now used by another breed) and the 'Missouri Mastiff' with an eighty year history the breed has been remarketed and has a growing band of followers.  Critics say the breed is merely a hybrid between the Presa Canario and the Mastiff, yet various breeders claim to have several generations of these dogs; if this accusation were correct then the f1 and f2 generations etc would not breed true.
Height is an ambitious 29" at the shoulder for dogs, with bitches a little smaller.  Weight 90 to 120 lbs.
